Tariq is a Partner with EY’s Indirect Tax group with overmore than 15 years of experience servicing clients. Tariq is a Chartered Professional Accountant and focuses on a broad range of indirect taxes including Goods and Services Tax (GST), Harmonized Sales Tax, Quebec Sales Tax and Provincial Sales Tax.  

Relevant Financial Services Experience: Tariq has extensive experience in servicing financial service clients across Canada, including providing assistance to the large Canadian and U.S.- based banks, lending companies, asset managers, cryptocurrency firms, partnerships, security dealers, brokers, insurance companies, pension entities and other financial institutions with various indirect tax compliance obligations. This includes having experience in providing advice and assistance in relation to financial services (including selected listed financial institution matters and self-assessment obligations), fund management services, cryptocurrency- related services, partnership transactions and investment banking matters. In addition to this, he works with clients in the financial services sector on matters including indirect tax planning, assistance and representation responding to audits and assessments, assistance in system implementation, and providing an analysis on highly technical issues in the financial services sector. Tariq also has extensive experience in dealing with the Canada Revenue Agency.  

In addition to the foregoing, Tariq has industry experience based on his time spent at another Big 4 Accounting Firm, the Bank of Canada (Central Bank) and at a large Fortune 500 Finance Company.   

Value to client: Tariq is well recognized as a subject matter expert and has: (i) presented at various seminars including at a big 4 firm's Asset Management seminar, the Council on State Taxation, the Tax Technical Update for the EY Canadian Tax Library and the Canadian Insurance Accounting Association; (ii) a regular writer in respect of the CPA Canada’s Commodity Tax News, including on matters involving the contentious issues in the financial service industry (including in the banking and lending space), investment limited partnerships, real estate, repossession and bankruptcy matters; and (iii) a regular writer in respect of EY’s Guide to GST/HST, Chapter 13: Financial Services.
